Winter Sports

Lake Placid has a full array of Olympic-class winter sports venues and it hosts several world cup events every winter. Virtually all these facilities are open for public use. People live here for this experience, access to coaching, etc.

Ski Conditions at Whiteface

Cross Country Skiing conditions in six nearby XC ski areas including the Olympic Trails.  The Jackrabbit Trail x-country trail extends from Keene all the way to Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths.  Lots of people ski up the Lake Road and back for a nice winter outing. There are many other nearby trails suitable for cross-country skiing at a wide range of difficulty and distances.  Look for guidebooks at The Mountaineer.

Coaching youth with the potential for international competition of all ski sports is available through the New York Ski Education Foundation.   Local coaching for international luge competition (and an adult fantasy camp) luge is available through USA Luge.  Coaches for ALL ages and levels of figure skating can be at Lake Placid Skating.

NEice & Rock and River are centers of ice climbing and winter mountaineering. The Mountaineer hosts two popular winter sports festivals.  One on winter mountaineering in January and another on backcountry skiing in March.

The ORDA calendar site has all the details about what Olympic facilities are open.  Competition schedules and times when the bobsled/luge track is accessible to the public. Look here for when is the speed skating oval open to the public.  What about figure skating? Etc.  Every winter Lake Placid host a variety of World Cup competition at the Olympic facilities and the ORDA site is the best way to find out details, order tickets, etc.

Here in Town, there is public skating behind the Community Center on Church Street in Keene.

The Mt VanHovenberg Center includes cross country skiing, snowshoeing trails and a biathlon range.

The Tobaggan Chute on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid is a wintertime favorite.
