Maps

When they named all the roads in Town, no one knew where any address was. "Panther Path? Sorry, never heard of it..." Now it is all on the web.

Click on this to get a PDF of the USGS Keene Valley Quadrangle Topo map that you would buy in a store for a hike, for example.  It is a big file and will take some time to download.

Google Maps and Maquest links follow but note they both have errors and ommissions.  So look at both to be sure you know where you are going.

Google Maps show a street map.  Type in your street address and click on the buttons on the upper right corner to overlay satellite imagery and  terrain (topo line) maps.  You can zoom in to your area and get excellent detail, better than the USGS topo map link I show above and this is much faster.  Pretty cool.

Mapquest has what it calls Aerial Maps, which are taken from aircraft instead of a satellite, so it has more detailed aerial images than Google Maps

Type in your street address and the street address of your destination and these sites produce driving directions and estimated time to the destination.  Print the directions and go.

The Essex County GIS tax maps have the best aerial photography of, say, your house.  If you click on it give it some time to load and use the tools on the left to find your way around.

Many other types of web sites will show you similar maps.  Phonebooks, for example, will show you the phone number, the street address, and a map of the locations.  Some weather sites link to maps as well.  If you really want to have fun with maps, download Google Earth.  You can fly around the planet and zoom down into Keene, all with real images.  If nothing else on the web has impressed you yet, this will blow you away.
