The Keene Community Garden is located on the south end of Marcy Field, across from the swimming hole. The Town provides the space and the water. The people using the space organize together to get the common work done. Each person gets a plot and you can grow your own with cooperative help to do things like watering when you are away for a few days. Dues are $10 dollars per plot. This is a great alternative for new garderers since there a people around to answer questions, and it is perfect for people who don't have a nice sunny garden spot at their home in the forest. The Keene Central School has a garden that students plant and maintain and the produce is used in the cafeteria, and soon it wil have a small dome greenhouse. Students learn about healthy eating, gardening skills and the environment. The hitch is that when school is out in the summer, the garden still needs regular maintenance work to have produce in the fall. So, they look for families to adopt the garden for a week of watering and weeding. They get the produce that is ripe that week. So you get to have a nice big garden, but you only need to take care of it for a week - what a deal!. It is another nice way to get our hands in the dirt and some fresh local food without doing every last bit of the work yourself. This could be a good way for summer residents to get their hands on a garden. Plans are in the works to build some sorts of greenhouse to extend the producing season of this garden. This got started in 1995 as a composting program that is now Cornell Case Study. In 2010 the cafeteria crossed a major threshold, eliminating all processed food from the menu.
